Straw bale house, Wellington Somerset
In the summer of 2018 we carried out works on a straw bale house in Somerset. The house is on a beautiful small holding, so it was important that the house sat softly in the landscape. We installed a green roof and planted it with meadow species. The building is lime rendered externally with curved reveals back to oak doors and windows made by a local joiner. Internally it is plastered with with a clay plaster. Clay taken from the site was used on the backing coats with a finish clay plaster bought in for the final coats. The bathroom is plastered with tadelakt (a form of traditional lime plaster that is both breathable and hydrophobic). Work still goes on in the house, but it is coming together nicely.
