Kelvin Players Theatre Foyer, Bristol
We were asked to design a new entrance foyer for the Kelvin Players Community Theatre, just off Gloucester Road, Bristol. Although not listed, the theatre is a culturally significant building in the area, so we wanted to design something that whilst being modern and light also utilised an age old material, oak timber.
Having received planning permission we entered the construction stage of the project in late 2017. The oak was jointed with a traditional mortice and tenon joint, with the glazing concealed within the posts using a direct glazing technique. A triple glazed roof window provides more light to the space and is surrounded by a green roof (planted with a variety of sedums). Some old stone from the building was reclaimed for the construction of the plinth wall which the timber frame sits on. Internally a large old window was removed and steels installed to open up the space, whilst elements of the old window and the old external stone wall were retained to celebrate some of the character of the existing building.
